“A-Wassailing”
It’s usually sub-zero cold or raining and muddy when the annual Wassail comes around. Fortunately the day was relatively mild if a little grey and overcast.
There’s a bit of milling about waiting for something to happen at the start then suddenly it’s Wassail time. Everyone is invited into a circle around the wassail tree so that the tree can be blessed with cider and woken from its slumbers.
When that’s over, there’s a mad rush as everyone tries to find a suitable branch to tie a ribbon on the Wassail tree. It’s difficult to photograph in this kind of situation as there’s a lot going on in a short period of time. There’s the difficulty of trying to get in relatively close to what’s going on and not get in the way. Also, a large clunky camera and branches don’t mix well. Anyway, the trees were woken and blessed and wishes made for another year.
This was my favourite photograph from the day.
