London Tate Gallery Trip

This year it was a ludicrously early, freezing cold start to the trip with the added bonus of the threat of snow. Yes, it was time for the annual art/photography trip to London. With my bag rammed full of hat, scarf, gloves and food I was hopefully prepared for the long day ahead. It was dark when our coach left but after a while the sun came up as we made our way along the M4.

I always think that London isn’t that far away but forget how long it takes to actually get into central London. It was starting to snow by the time we arrived.

First up, Tate Modern, which as I’ve said before, it’s not my cup of tea for the most part. Fortune smiled on me this year as the ‘Radical Eye’ photography exhibition was on. The first thing I had to get used to was the size of most of the exhibits, photograph size. This meant getting closer than usual which tended to be difficult as it was very busy. Having said that, there was some wonderful photography to see and a nice range of subjects. The exhibition was a special highlight of the trip.

I made the decision to try the ‘Tate to Tate’ Ferry rather than walk to Tate Britain. It was an odd experience sitting in a floating waiting room, swaying when any boat that went past. Before long the ferry turned up and we were on our way. The ferry comes highly recommended for a unique view along the river and under bridges. It took no time at all to get to Tate Britain.

Tate Britain contains some of the most amazing and famous paintings and sculptures. I highly recommend a visit, especially to see my favourite part, the Turner collection. There is never enough time to see it all.

Before long it was time to board our coach, waiting outside, and head off on the long journey back home. Tired but happy.
