What I did on my holidays

Portslade beach huts during a storm

Well, that’s the summer holidays just about done and dusted. Although, to be truthful, there’s not been a lot of dust. I may have a dislike of very hot weather but it’s been a bit so-so in the weather department. The long lost sunny blue sky days of our youth never quite seems to match the reality of a British summer…

We had a welcome short break with family near Brighton. Needless to say it rained and was very windy and wet but it was good to get away. The photograph of the beach huts was taken in a howling gale in a gap between showers. I had to lean on something to stop myself being blown about to take it. I’ve run it through Lightroom then extra edited it in Silver Efex Pro. I’ve spent a bit of time working with Silver Efex Pro over the holidays. It has great potential with the right photograph.

A train crossing at Portslade

Portslade, where we stayed, is an interesting place. The area has a multitude of railway crossings like the one above. It’s seems odd to see high street traffic coming to a halt while waiting for a train or two to pass. Earlier I spotted the basket full of crockery in a second hand warehouse, yes warehouse. It was difficult to get near due to social distancing so it was taken rather quickly on my iPhone. I’ve been pushing myself to use my phone camera a lot more recently. I feel that as long as what I’m producing pleases me then that’s all that matters. I’ve been quite pleasantly surprised at the quality of images I’m getting. I sent off one image to be printed by ‘thePrintSpace’ at A4. It came back absolutely, stunningly perfect. Don’t let anyone tell you smartphone photography is not real photography..

I’ve spent some time reorganising the general gubbins of this website. Hopefully it looks a bit better and runs a bit smoother than before. My wallet is a bit lighter that’s for sure.
During August I signed up for a new app called Glass. Its early days but I quite like it. No adverts, no likes, no algorithms and they won’t sell your data. It’s just photographs. Glass is subscription-based and has a introduction cost of £29.99 for the year. iOS only at the moment I’m afraid.

Clifton suspension bridge behind flowers

Lastly, during a walk around Leigh woods I saw this photo of the Clifton Suspension bridge that looked hopeful. It was taken on my little Sony RX100 II. Took a fair bit of editing before I was happy with it though.

Right, that’s enough for now, see you at some point in September.
